Job Summary: The Certified Peer Recovery Specialist is primarily responsible for conducting outreach, peer recovery support counseling and advocacy services. The primary goal is to engage and link clients to care and support for their identified recovery needs. In addition to direct care, this position will also entail community engagement and outreach, data input, coordination and administrative duties.
Communication: Good oral and written communication skills are required for this position. The person in this position must be able to communicate effectively with the clients, staff, and others; and contribute to a positive environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Engages individuals using peer counseling techniques to address behavioral change and readiness for treatment through face-to-face counseling, electronic and/or telephonic follow-up and group therapy.
- Provides brief assessments of need to identify potential barriers and readiness to access treatment services.
- Creates individualized Wellness Recovery Action Plans (WRAP).
- Provides psychoeducation about dependency, the recovery process, stages of change model, self-advocacy, and risk reduction.
- Provides smoking cessation counseling.
- Develops and maintains relationships with other treatment agencies and recovery organizations in order to help clients connect to and participate in treatment.
- Serves as client advocate and directly facilitates client access to services, which may include direct referral to substance use services, psychiatric care, medical treatment, case management, emergency housing or other support services.
- Works in the community with individuals, organizations, and events to promote recovery.
- Adheres to quality practice standards and standards of care for profession, including client confidentiality.
- Demonstrates appropriate boundaries with clients.
- Maintains confidentiality, obtains consent, and facilitates exchange of information as necessary. Protects client and agency information at all times, adhering to agency Confidentiality Policy, HIPAA as well as other laws governing privacy/disclosure.
- Maintains timely and accurate notes for documentation and evaluation purposes.
- Participates in weekly supervision as scheduled.
- Attends and participates in relative trainings and professional development.
- Attends and participates in all agency and program meetings and communicates all pertinent information with treatment team.
- Works flexible hours.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education, Training, License and Certification, Skills and Experience:
- Completion of Recovery Specialist certification course by an accredited provider
- Must have a lived recovery experience
- Minimum High School diploma (or equivalent)
- Experience with or knowledge of substance use assessment (ASAM), peer counseling and different recovery modalities (12-Step, Refuge Recovery, SMART). Willingness to utilize different modalities to meet client needs is necessary.
- Must be culturally competent to work with groups from diverse racial, educational, socioeconomic backgrounds, and sexual orientations and gender presentations
- Experience with and knowledge of client-centered engagement approaches and techniques, including Motivational Interviewing (MI).
- Possess an understanding of trauma and how this impacts a person's recovery.
- Awareness of community resources
- Must complete mandatory trainings: CPR, First Aid, Narcan, HIV, Confidentiality, TB/STI.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, effectively take initiative, and meet deadlines
- Proficiency in Athena EMR and other databases
- Ability to communicate and collaborate with other care providers and professionals
- Attention to detail and accuracy
Clearances:
1. Background checks are required, including Criminal Background Clearance, Child Abuse Clearance, and FBI Clearance.
Physical Requirements:
1. The ability to sit for extended periods of time
2. The ability to communicate using written and spoken words
3. Must have all necessary vaccinations
4. Annual PPD
