Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) is the nation's first hospital devoted exclusively to the care of children. CHOP is looking for an Investment Associate to join the Investment Office. Responsible for managing the Hospital's approximately $3.5 billion endowment, the Investment Office is comprised of a small team that has a large impact on CHOP's long-term mission. The Investment Associate would be primarily responsible for supporting the team's private investment efforts (emphasis on venture capital), but will also have a broader impact by participating in talent recruitment, conducting in-depth market research, and assisting in portfolio management decisions. The position requires outstanding written and verbal communication skills as the Investment Associate will be directly involved in the due diligence of new investment opportunities, including the preparation of investment memoranda.

What you will doSupport the work of the VP, Private Investments to:

  • Participate in independent, rigorous decision-making across the Private Investments portfolio (Private Equity and Real Assets).
  • Monitor existing Private Investments via periodic update meetings and calls with managers, reviewing performance reports, quarterly letters and all other manager correspondence.
  • Document manager due diligence and prepare investment memoranda on new investments.
  • Process any requested consents as appropriate.
  • Evaluate re-investment opportunities with existing managers.
  • Source and evaluate prospective investments with new top tier managers.Portfolio Management
    • Assist in monitoring and continuously re-underwriting exposures and maintaining close relationships and communication with existing managers.
    • Track and maintain the ongoing pipeline of prospective managers.
    • Analyze portfolio performance, risk factors & exposures, and cash flow projections in these categories.
    • Conduct comprehensive research and assessment of valuations and trends in Private Investments.
    • Engage with managers about their Diversity, Equity and Inclusion profiles and initiatives.
    • Work with the team to prepare for Committee and Board meetings as needed.People Management
      • Participate in recruiting and marketing.
      • Mentor and train more junior investment personnel.Education Qualifications
        • Bachelor's Degree Required
        • Master's Degree PreferredExperience Qualifications
          • At least three (3) years of experience in evaluating investment opportunities in Private Markets at a high-performance investment organization required
          • Investment management experience at a $2 billion plus Endowment, Foundation, or Family Office PreferredSkills and Abilities
            • Industry expertise in and knowledge of the manager landscapes for Private Equity (including Venture Capital). (Required proficiency)
            • Outstanding written and verbal communication, as well as presentation skills. (Required proficiency)
            • Demonstrated quantitative and qualitative analytical skills, including proficiency in performance analytics.
            • Ability to identify potential conflicts of interest or other concerns.
            • Ability to develop a view for or against a particular manager/fund.
            • Intellectual honesty and integrity.
            • Team-oriented approach and strong interpersonal skills. History of building and fostering trusting, sustainable relationships with key stakeholders. Able to collaborate and partner with other subject matter experts and business leaders.
            • Organized, professional, and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple assignments efficiently and effectively.
            • Self-motivated, resourceful, and independent; can develop project plans, adapt to a dynamic environment, provide updates, and execute on time without detailed guidance.
            • Practical in approach - has a natural orientation to getting things accomplished quickly in a high-quality way and maximizes results with available resources.
            • Demonstrated success collaborating as part of a diverse and high-performing team.
            • Transparent and able to incorporate feedback into personal performance in real time.
            • Advanced Excel and modeling skills with competence across the Microsoft Office Suite.Licenses and Certifications
              • Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) - CFA Institute - upon hire - Preferred or
              • Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) Certification - Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst Association(CAIA) - upon hire - Preferred
