The Pretrial Unit focuses on reducing mass incarceration by supporting clients before trial through a wide array of rehabilitative initiatives and programs to divert clients from incarceration. The Paralegal in the Pretrial Unit assists in the representation of indigent defendants in a variety of matters. The primary responsibility of the paralegal is to oversee all aspects of the Early Bail Review (EBR) program. The Paralegal is a liaison and advocate in coordinating cases with attorneys, social workers, clients, family members and individuals involved in all aspects of the criminal justice system. Paralegals interface with each other, attorneys, clients, private counsel, judges and others in the court system. The work they do is of the utmost importance in ultimately bringing about the best representation for Defender clients.

What You'll Do*

* Receive new files from the records department and identify Defender conflicts of interest and recommend resolutions
* Sort new files by those eligible for EBR and those that are not.
* Manage all aspects of EBR file flow: assign files to interviewing attorneys and route files to appropriate areas in the office.
* Communicate with clients, clients' family, attorneys and staff regarding relevant information for a bail reduction motion
* Answer incoming calls for the Chief of the Pretrial Unit including inquiries from clients and Defender staff
* Correspond with clients' regarding upcoming court hearings
* Research clients' background in cases where necessary to advance clients interest
* Review and analyze client's current and previous cases
* Request, receive and review discovery
* Assist with other administrative tasks as assigned by the Chief or Assistant Chiefs of the Pretrial Unit.

What You'll Need*

* Bachelor's degree or Associate's degree with Paralegal Certification or any equivalent combination of acceptable education and experience.
* Incredible attention to detail and excellent organizational skills
* Experience working with indigent clients in criminal justice proceedings, preferred
* Must have strong analytical and interpretive skills
* Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
* Computer literacy including the ability to learn multiple internal and external computer systems
* Ability to learn the court system and internal and external procedures
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Full Covid vaccination or approved exemption request
