Job Summary

POSITION PROFILE: (Basic Purpose of Position)

The Veterinary Care Technician provides manual and technical care for veterinary specimen used in research and teaching programs in accordance with general instructions received from a supervisor. Work is performed under general direction and can include: maintaining the condition of life specimen, the cleanliness of the facilities, and the orderly function of the veterinary care unit.


Operates mechanical cage and bottle washer equipment, high-pressure washers, and autoclaves.

Uses chemical cleaners, detergents, and disinfectants in sanitation of equipment and premises.

Performs minor paramedical functions under close supervision to include the administration of drugs and the collection of specimens such as blood, urine, and feces from a variety of veterinary specimen.

Recognizes and reports unusual signs or abnormal behavior and reports to investigator and veterinarians.

Routinely handles, relocates, and transports veterinary specimen within the facilities to and from farms and markets and to and from airports.

Receives, identifies, and houses veterinary specimen. Maintains veterinary records including medical records, inventory, sales and transfers, receipt and identification records, and inventory of supplies. Receives and stores materials and supplies.

Notifies administrative personnel when inventory needs replenishing. Instructs and supervises on-the-job training of subordinate veterinary care personnel. Assists in the didactic aspects of veterinary caretaker training program.

Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS (Education/Training, Experience and Certifications)

High school diploma or GED required, associate degree preferred

Considerable experience in veterinary care in laboratories; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

American Association for Laboratory Veterinary Science certification - Preferred

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES (Those necessary to perform the job competently)

Conform to all customer requirements for background checks, health and safety issues, security clearances and medical checkups

Requires knowledge in the care of laboratory animals

Strong communication skills

Excellent Customer Service Skills; display a professional can-do attitude

Perform duties with the highest regard for safety and quality

Ability to understand and follow site protocols, policies and procedures

Must be flexible, forward- thinking, motivated, and have the ability to act independently

Valid Driver's License

Must be able to lift 50lbs minimum

Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office with proficiency in Word and Excel

Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines

Knowledge of VWR products and services

Problem-solving skills

Typically works in an laboratory or production environment with adequate lighting and ventilation and a normal range of temperature and noise level

The associate is required to stand and walk for the majority of the working day. The physical requirements of the job are for associates to talk, hear, bend/stoop, squat, crawl, climb height, reach above shoulder height, crouch, kneel, balance, and push/pull. Furthermore, the job requires associates to lift/carry/push or pull up to 25 pounds with or without assistance.

Associates use both hands for repetitive actions such as grasping and manipulating as well as both feet for repetitive movement operating foots controls. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
