Responsibilities Thought Leader for North American Safety and Health Strategy. Monitors the effective execution of various safety engineering, safety awareness, accident investigation, and safety compliance activities across all Company divisions, all as part of creating a safety culture throughout the organization. Gives guidance on program design as part of a company-wide comprehensive Safety and Health (SH) program. A significant part of the job also includes coordinating activities with other departments and outside agencies, and tracking/measuring the effectiveness of programs over time. This person will be working closely with field leadership across all North American RIM business lines to ensure local field leaders are equipped to drive a Zero Injury Culture. This person will be engaged in the prevention of accidents, incidents, and events that harm people, property, or the environment. He/she will use qualitative and quantitative analysis of simple and complex products, systems, operations, and activities to identify hazards. He/she will evaluate the hazards to identify what events can occur and the likelihood of occurrence, severity of results, risk (a combination of probability and severity), and cost. He/she will identify what controls are appropriate and their cost and effectiveness. He/she will make recommendations to leadership, designers, customers, government agencies, and others. Controls may involve administrative controls (such as plans, policies, procedures, training, etc.) and engineering controls. He/she will plan and implement safety policies and procedures in compliance with, local, state, and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations. This person will also be devoted to the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, prevention, and control of those environmental factors or stresses arising in or from the workplace which may cause sickness, impaired health and well being, or significant discomfort among workers or among citizens of the community. Promote a Culture of Whole Life Safety Serves as the strategic catalyst for setting the direction the SH program; works with senior leaders across the businesses and functions to inspire participation and to bring cohesiveness and synergy to the program Develops a compelling, strategic-focused and multi-faceted communication plan that addresses owners, clients, employees, management, and other affiliates; sells ideas and solutions by forming partnerships with operating leaders and corporate executives and demonstrating value Drives the operational implementation of initiatives and processes in such a way as to build an organization-wide safety culture; ensures that the key elements of this safety culture are consistent with the emphases and metrics of the parent organization Reviews accident investigations and participates as directed; ensures proper policies and procedures are followed; prepares (in conjunction with others) SH report; provides analysis of trends/data and provides recommendations for follow-up and action planning Monitors developments, trends and legislation related to industry safety and evaluates impact on business operations; recommends policy and procedural improvements as appropriate Oversees and participates in the development of (in conjunction with others) various leadership training and employee awareness programs; monitors the effectiveness of these programs and links training completion/performance to safety/business metrics Attends relevant industry conferences and professional meetings as part of benchmarking; identifies innovations/practices/tools/approaches that have potential utility for IM; serves as subject matter expert and coach to operating leaders across the company and industry Represents the IM Service Line Support organization to affiliate organizations, external agencies, and public officials as part of broad planning or communication efforts; explains, justifies, defends department programs, policies, and activities as part of negotiations or issue resolution Plans and coordinates, through subordinate staff and embedded division contacts, the SH work plan; recommends projects and programmatic areas of responsibility; reviews and evaluates work methods and procedures; meets with staff and division contacts to facilitate work and resolve problems Promotes Customer Relations Builds effective relationships with IM divisions and customers, that reflect and support company core values and meets or exceeds the customer's expectations Actively participates in industry, client, and community relations to enhance company image Promotes Core Values Serves as a role model and promotes professional behavior Participates in company training programs and commits to self development Builds and stretches people and self by providing challenging assignments, achievable and motivational development plans, and ongoing actionable and candid feedback that help employees achieve career goals Negotiates skillfully in tough situations with internal and external parties by winning concessions without damaging relationships and being direct and diplomatic 100% Qualifications Functional Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Safety and Health or equivalent and a minimum of 12+ years of varied industrial safety and health experience; 5+ years of broad, cross-divisional management experience Proven ability to influence cross-functional teams without formal authority Expert in depth knowledge of safety and health programs, policies, and prevention/intervention strategies Ability to establish credibility with customers and work well with all levels of management Strong leadership, problem solving, and decision making skills required Strong written/verbal communication, excellent organizational and time-management skills Strong knowledge of safety and health regulatory requirements Experience in contesting and abating regulatory citations Strong coaching, training and motivational skills; ability to lead a team Strong analysis and data analytic skills Business Expertise: Plays a key role in developing the safety Strategy and Roadmap an influences leaders throughout the organization to drive our safety culture and performance. This requires he/she to build and leverage a network of support to drive results. It also requires vision and finesse to navigate the organization and prioritize our activities so the organization can successfully adopt and sustain progress. He/she will be adept at helping the organization solve problems ranging from near term compliance issues to systemic issues requiring thoughtful, systematic solutions. He/she will play a significant role in our progress toward world class safety performance. He/she will also help us shape how we are perceived by the market and our customers positioning us to meet the safety expectations of our most demanding customers. He/she will support the North American business and the Enterprise in achieving its safety objectives. Able to translate safety vision to a wide range of leaders so it is appropriate and meaningful at all levels of the organization. Communicate effectively at all levels of the organization. Exude a level of positive discontent. Be able to challenge individuals in a way that inspires them to achieve higher levels of safety performance.
