Physician Assistant (PA) / Gender Affirming Surgery

Job SummaryThe Physician Assistant (PA) functions as a member of the healthcare team in a manner consistent with their scope of practice in Pennsylvania in concert with the policies and procedures of Hahnemann University Hospital. The Physician Assistant promotes image enhancement of the organization and its service.

The Physician Assistant is licensed to practice in an advanced scope of practice. The PA is responsible and accountable for her/his professional expertise and demonstrates a high level of knowledge while performing acts of medical therapeutics under the supervision of a physician who is licensed to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The supervising physician is responsible for directing the practice of the PA. The PA is accountable to the Medical Director/physician supervisor for medical diagnosis and therapeutics, Senior Director in Nursing, and to the employing institution to practice in the established position description of the Physician Assistant. The Physician Assistant will coordinate care of patients from initial assessment through transition of care, and serve as a resource for patients, families, physicians, and other health team members.

The Physician Assistant will:

  • provide first assist surgical support on all supervising physician's OR cases
  • dictate assigned supervising physician's cases in a timely manner
  • perform thorough patient assessments, completes orders
  • actively rounds daily on the supervising physician's post-op patients
  • order and interpret laboratory and diagnostic tests
  • prepare discharge summary paperwork
  • provide comprehensive care to the supervising physician's patients, from initial history and physical to post-surgical
  • provide on-call support for supervising physician's surgical and non-surgical patients 24/7 every other week, including holidays
  • consistently revise pre-op and post-op patient instructions, as directed, in order to improve patient care
  • develop OP reports templates, as required
  • participate in interdisciplinary rounds, conferences, and journal clubs
  • initiates and maintain WPATH (World Professional Association for Transgender Health) membership
  • attend outside conferences
  • assist, as directed, in the development and conductance of the Gender Affirming Surgery Fellowship program for the hospital

    The PA maintains professional values that promote his/her role to serve as a role model to other clinicians in the hospital and community, to serve as a resource person for clinical teams who have questions or concerns regarding patient problems, to serve as an educator who teaches other clinicians advanced assessment techniques, and to participate on relevant committees that will enhance practice and promote change that will increase patient satisfaction and outcome.

Requires frequent use of independent judgment in a clinical setting in evaluating and treating patients.

        Training & EducationGraduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program

        Required LicensesCurrent Pennsylvania Physician Assistant License with appropriate Supervising Physician(s) listed and Certified as a PA: MS, PA-C State of Pennsylvania

        Candidate must have, or be able to apply for, a Pennsylvania Osteopathic PA License

        Professional QualificationsMS, PA-C; BLS, ACLS

        ExperiencePrior work experience suitable for the position is preferred

        Supervisory ResponsibilityThe PA will perform patient care duties and responsibilities under the supervision of a physician in accordance with established credentialing agreements. The physician is responsible for directing the practice of the PA. PI105482113
