Job Description:

City Year Philadelphia is seeking an Instructional Director who is responsible for creating and supporting the oversite of an academic strategy and model that enables City Year Philadelphia to reach school and student outcome goals and consistently strive toward equity in the Philadelphia education system. Reporting to the Managing Director, Service & Strategy (MDSS), the Instructional Director supervises three instructional coaches and collaborates closely with a team of directors and managers to inform the organization's academic strategy and ensure that the organization's academic model, consisting of scripted and unscripted Tier 2 interventions and Tier 1 academic supports, is implemented with fidelity. The Instructional Director is responsible for building and maintaining strategic relationships that ensure that our instructional practices are aligned to the School District of Philadelphia and grounded in research on effective practices for communities of color. This role will work both internally and externally to drive the operations of City Year Philadelphia's strategic plan to incorporate research-based intervention programs such as Leveled Literacy Intervention into its services to schools and students, with the ultimate goal of improving academic on-track and proficiency rates for students served by City Year's AmeriCorps Members.

Manage Instructional Staff Team

  • Manage and develop instructional coach team in supporting the site in implementation of the Academic Strategy and Model
  • Co-observe and coach with team members in order to improve staff instructional practice
  • Engage in observation of team member's facilitation at the site and team level
  • Engage in consistent critical thinking around how internal and external systems impact the role as a manager through the lens of racism and actively work toward an anti-racist, equitable and inclusive work environment for all team members
    Oversee Academic Strategy and Model
    • Oversee the development and implementation of the site's Academic Strategy and Model through strategic decision making, research, analysis and innovation for both Tier One supports and Tier Two interventions
    • Oversee site development and implementation of the site's Academic Curricula Plan, including research, acquisition, training, evaluation and implementation of curricula for all students served in math and literacy
    • Oversee Instructional Management Strategy focused on support and accountability of observation & coaching practices, site instructional rounds, and instructional walk-throughs
    • Oversee the development and implementation of corps and staff instructional trainings and resources to support the successful implementation of the Academic Strategy and Model
    • Oversee data driven instruction practices at the site through supporting the school student assessment process, training on using data to inform instruction, and collaborating with Impact Analytics staff on effective data review and analysis
    • Support math and literacy content staff leads in developing site supports that are aligned to the academic model and outcomes
    • Engage in consistent critical thinking around how internal and external systems impact our academic work with students through the lens of racism and poverty and actively work toward anti-racist, equitable and inclusive instruction for all students
    • Engage in co-observation and coaching and instructional walk-throughs in order to see academic model implementation, improve site instructional practices, and coach staff to improve individual practice
      Develop and Manage Strategic Instructional Partnerships
      • Develop and manage strategic instructional partnerships at the School District of Philadelphia in order to ensure academic alignment and leverage professional development opportunities
      • Develop and manage strategic external instructional partnerships that support our academic work through training and consultancy
      • Support school partnerships through problem solving with Impact Delivery team and being a resource and partner in planning for partnership meetings and trainings related to instruction
      • Engage instructional stakeholders at the site (including the Site Instructional Leadership Team and Impact Leadership Team) to ensure a consistent feedback loop and improvement
        Impact Department Leadership
        • Serve as a member of the Impact department's leadership team, collaborating broadly on the department's overall leadership
        • Collaborate and support the Learning and Development Director in the implementation of corps and staff L&D
        • Engage in consistent critical thinking around how internal and external systems impact City Year through the lens of racism and actively work toward an anti-racist, equitable and inclusive work environment for all team members

          Organizational Initiatives and Site Support
          • Participate in network-wide meetings and calls, providing insight, feedback, and collective problem solving.
          • Serve as a member of the City Year Site Leadership Team, providing strategic insight into site priorities
          • Engage in structured discussion and training on diversity, belonging, inclusivity and belonging aimed at developing stronger cultural competency, both individually and collectively as a site
          • Partner with City Year Philadelphia's departments and staff to ensure that site-wide goals are met, - including, but not limited to, the AmeriCorps member applicant interview process, staff interviews, stakeholder engagement, event and service day participation, and cross-departmental committees
          • Attend overnight conferences throughout the year, including Impact Summer Charger, a week-long training conference for City Year staff held in Boston in July, as well as additional engagement and training activities throughout the year

            • Drives Vision: - Generates a network-wide mindset and plays an active part in motivating, encouraging and rewarding individuals for their commitment and ongoing efforts to achieve long-term vision; changes systems, structures and policies that undermine vision; reinvigorates change processes with new projects and change agents

              Additional Qualifications
              • Bachelor's Degree required
              • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience, with proven ability to deliver strong, measurable results
              • Deep knowledge of instructional strategy, with a focused understanding of intervention for students not performing on grade level
              • Knowledge of adult learning practices; experience leading adult learning a plus
              • Knowledge of social emotional learning principles
              • Comfortability with leading and facilitating in both large and small group settings
              • Understanding of large-scale urban school systems; experience operating within such systems a plus
              • Strong initiative and ability to work independently to achieve goals
              • Proven track record of building highly effective teams and coaching to exceed goals through the delivery of high-impact service
              • Energized by working with diverse teams and stakeholder groups committed to expanding educational opportunity in Philadelphia and advancing social justice
              • High emotional intelligence and experience in developing a diverse and inclusive workforce and working effectively with people of different work styles and backgrounds
              • Attention to detail and proven project management skills
              • Effective systems builder and developer of process and protocols, along with the ability to socialize them as useful tools for department and site
              • Ability to translate an organization or department's vision into an operating plan, effectively communicate that plan and timeline to internal and external audiences, establish accountability metrics, and monitor performance
              • Track record of anticipating challenges, securing resources to meet needs, linking decisions to their potential benefits and consequences, and seeking guidance and input through the planning or change process
              • Ability to adapt and excel in diverse, youthful, high energy, entrepreneurial, and rapidly-changing environment
