What does a Chief Development Officer do, anyway

On a daily basis, you will be working with the top 10 customers and the internal team to keep sales on track, ensure customer loyalty and satisfaction is thriving, identify sales opportunities for the company and for our customers, work with the VP of Brand to roll out marketing and product initiatives, and inform the co-founders of strategic threats and opportunities. You will create the frameworks and processes by which we evaluate our Master Licensees, both prospective and existing. While you will think strategically and rise above the details, you will often need to roll up your sleeves and work tactically. Some days you will wear your sales hat, some days you will wear your marketing hat, some days you will wear your customer service hat, but every day your overall goal is to build and grow a sustainable and profitable sales process. International travel is a major part of this job - expect to spend 12 - 16 weeks out of the year traveling internationally - usually in 1-2 week, multi-country tours.

In plain terms, here’s what this usually means:

Master Licensee Sales Support High-level customer strategy: Identify competitive threats to the company and product opportunities in the market Identify and assist in closing new partnerships, sales channels, and strategic opportunities Identify areas of opportunity for Master Licensees to ensure same-store growth Hold monthly touch-base calls with all Master Licensees to gauge health of the relationship, forecast store openings and sales, maintain a strong relationship between them and you, uphold product adoption, and collect feedback on current products to help the founders decide what needs to be improved, discontinued, or created. Visit the top 5 Master Licensees 1-2 times per year Create and document KPI’s and processes to hold rhythmic meetings with customers to gauge and predict: Relationship Health Product Health Sales Forecasts Market SWOT analysis Ensure Master Licensees are using best practices and following the latest version of our kiosk business model, while identifying, documenting, and training best practices of the organization using “carrots and sticks” to make sure our network is constantly improving. Resolve high-level accounts receivable issues with key customers. Marketing and Brand Support Work with VP of Branding to roll out branding initiatives, keep all partners on the same page as to where the brand is going, and collect feedback on what branding/marketing efforts are needed to support our Master Licensees. Provide feedback and SWOT analysis to the VP of Branding to steer marketing and brand strategy. Perform monthly performance reviews with VP of Branding. Sales and Support Team Management Collect feedback on current products via PSMs, sales reps, and customer service rep to help the founders decide what needs to be improved, discontinued, or created. Create and document KPI’s and processes to hold rhythmic meetings with PSMs and CSRs to gauge and predict: Relationship Health Product Health Sales Forecasts Market SWOT analysis Create and document KPI’s, goals, and processes to hold rhythmic meetings with Sales Execs to: Set regular sales goals Ensure use of our CRM Work with sales reps to structure master license agreements, set customer quotas, and keep sales rep communication in line with realistic expectations Perform monthly performance reviews with PSMs, Sales Reps, and customer support reps. Leadership Team Collaboration Provide feedback and SWOT analysis to the founders to help steer high-level product development, sales strategy, and marketing strategy. Work with the leadership team to create processes, ensure cross-departmental collaboration, and roll out new procedures. Bring contributions, thoughts, and appreciation to the weekly huddle from your corner of the business. Other things to note This role will travel 8-12 weeks per year, mostly in 2-3 week long international trips, on a quarterly(ish) basis. Some last minute travel may pop up. You will have 2 x Partner Success Managers, 1 sales rep, 1 VP of Branding, and 1 customer service rep reporting directly to you. You will be directly accountable for 30%+ annual revenue growth, at 20%+ net profit margin. If this sounds like you, your previous education, work experience, and passions probably sound like this: College degree or higher 8+ years experience of international sales channel development for consumer goods, franchise a plus 3+ years in marketing, or working closely with a marketing manager, for consumer goods, franchise a plus Worldly and global, with a deep understanding of international cultures, etiquette, and mannerisms 5+ years of entrepreneurial work is a plus Enjoy travelling internationally, with the ability to spend up to 4 weeks overseas Seen as a people person who can naturally get customers on passionately onboard with a product or idea Creative with a never-ending stream of ideas and improvements for products and customer experiences Process and metric oriented Experience or ability to quickly learn: HubSpot, QuickBooks, Google Sheets, Basecamp, Magento Lastly, here’s what success looks like in this position: Overall company revenue continues to grow by a minimum of 30%, with a goal of 50%-100%, at a 20%+ net margin. All sales and marketing processes are documented, and have a high-level framework that decisions are made by The top 10 Master Licensees adopt and sell-through all of our core products, and are following best practices All Master Licensees who no longer are a fit for the company are terminated or have a plan to be transitioned out Customers, Partner Success Managers, and Sales Execs have KPI’s and are held accountable to them Sales has a full pipeline of qualified leads interested in a Master License opportunity The co-founders are kept out of sales and marketing tactical work, and rarely needed to complete your work, structure your goals, or manage your priorities Positions needed at the company in the Sales and Marketing departments are identified before they are needed, and communicated to the co-founders Monthly reports on the top 10 Master Licensee’s key activities, opportunities, and threats are presented to the co-founders Top 10 Master Licensees show year over year growth, both in new store expansion and in same-store sales. No Master Licensee has a past-due balance without having a plan to resolve the A/R.
