Under direction of the Director Garden Operations, the Horticulture and Grounds Manager provides frontline control and management of the Horticulture and Grounds team to ensure that work, projects, and services are carried out in accordance with Zoo and Departmental objectives, policies and work standards. The Manager coordinates all aspects of horticulture, arboriculture and grounds maintenance functions throughout the 42-acre garden, adjacent parking areas and site periphery. Performs all functions associated with the efficient and effective supervision of the department, including scheduling, training, payroll review and reviewing performance of subordinates. The Manager assists the Director of Garden Operations with hiring and firing, interviewing, and compliance with disciplinary procedures. Also communicates and coordinates routine and special project requirements to other departments with an emphasis on meeting and exceeding internal and external customer service standards. Coordinates with the Garden Services Department on operational related projects in the absence of the Director or Manager of Garden Services.


Develop team members and continue education of Grounds and Horticulture staff.

Manage seasonal, weekly and daily planning of team's tasks to maintain the Zoo grounds, parking areas and periphery.

Ensures proper use, safety, and security of Zoo property, tools, equipment, and chemicals to support grounds maintenance functions; operates and maintains equipment and vehicles in accordance with established policies.

Complies with and enforces all Zoo policies.

Working with peers across the organization, plan for horticulture improvements.

With team, develop strategies for better maintenance of roofs, pathways, drains.

With Director develop annual budgets and plans for continual improvements in operations, sustainability and appearance.

Develops work records, policies/procedures, and training materials for Horticulture and Grounds employees. Promotes and reinforces an accountability ethic in all employees.

Ensures that time cards, payroll, and other department records are maintained accurately, effectively and efficiently in accordance with FY budget.

Plan, budget and manage tree contractors.

Plan and assign work orders requested


Bachelor's Degree in Horticulture or 5 years of experience in the field.

Experience managing an operating budget

Ability to lead a union crew to achieve organizational goals

Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines and coordinate work with others.

Ability to work a flexible schedule that will include weekends, evenings and holidays.


Successful completion of a general medical and drug screen prior to starting work.

No allergies related to plants or animals, which may interfere with the ability to work.

Able to access all areas of buildings and grounds belonging to the Philadelphia Zoo.

Able to walk long distances and be on ones feet for long periods of time and outside in any weather conditions.

Must have received a complete Covid vaccination series (2 vaccines and 1 booster) or be able to obtain a medical or religious exemption.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $65,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
