Job DescriptionBecome a part of the "Bath-Built is Best-Built" tradition. Bath Iron Works is seeking someone who enjoys a dynamic, high-energy, high-impact environment to join its structural engineering team.In this unique role, you'll provide on-site structural engineering support for temporary structures used to complete some of the most complex warships built in the world.The core responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Engineering of crane lifts and turns of ship components weighing over 50 tons, involving varying levels of complexity.
  • Engineering of temporary ship supports, jigs, fixtures, lifting devices, and custom tools used in ship construction.
  • Determining lifting lug locations, temporary backup structures if required, welded connection details, and non-destructive testing (NDT) requirements.
  • Collaborating with the design team to communicate lifting and handling information to the trades.
  • Working with heavy transportation equipment such as Self Propelled Modular Transporters, Shipyard Transporters, and the Ship Translation System.
  • Interfacing with manufacturing personnel on the deck to provide guidance as needed.
  • Participating in or leading technical discussions with customers such as the U.S. Navy (NAVSEA and Supervisor of Shipbuilding) or others.
  • Working with engineers in a manufacturing environment with an emphasis on safety and high-quality work execution.Required/Preferred Education/Training
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering is required.Required/Preferred ExperienceEngineer I: 0-1 year of experience preferred.Engineer II: Minimum 1 year of applicable experience.
    • Practical experience and/or education in Structural Engineering and Design, focusing on welded connection design and NDT requirements.
    • Knowledge of AISC Steel Construction, ASME B30 & BTH (Below the Hook) Codes and Standards.
    • Familiarity with various grades and types of steel, aluminum, and wood materials.
    • Experience working in a time-sensitive environment with multiple priorities.
    • Strong leadership, self-confidence, and project management skills.
    • Proficiency with MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
    • Knowledge of structural analysis methods, including hand calculations and software tools such as RISA, Mathcad, FEMAP/Nastran, and experience with Beam and 3D Mesh Finite Element Analysis is preferred.This position requires the ability to obtain a government security clearance.
