The Bank seeks a well-trained and motivated Senior Big Data
Specialist to support the objectives of the Consumer Finance
Institute (CFI). The successful candidate will provide advanced
analytical and technical support to CFI researchers who use very
large data sets employing advanced computing methods. The
analytical and technical support will contribute to the development
of research papers, reports and visualizations using advanced
statistical and machine learning tools.
The Specialist will manage and update large data sets (10 TB). The
candidate will interface with the Research Department's automation
function and Information Technology Services (ITS) to identify the
most efficient hardware and software for managing and analyzing
large data sets. The candidate will be responsible for developing
robust and efficient computer programs for cleaning, documenting
and manipulating data.
The Senior Big Data Specialist will manage and review the work of
CFI research support staff (research assistants, analysts, and
interns). The successful candidate will participate in developing
programming strategies, code review and quality assurance. The
Specialist will also take a lead role in the hiring process for
research support as well as assigning appropriate accesses to data
Finally, the ideal candidate will work well independently at a high
level of technical complexity.
Candidates must have a Master's degree in finance, business,
economics, applied mathematics, statistics, or computer science, or
equivalent work experience. In addition, university level
instruction, or comparable experience that includes exposure to
advanced programming and statistics is required. Exposure to
artificial intelligence and machine learning is preferred. A
minimum of seven years of experience managing and analyzing very
large data sets, and supporting and producing rigorous research
results is required in addition to experience managing and training
research support staff.
Other requirements include: academic and/or work experience
employing Hadoop, hive and Spark, experience using SQL, extensive
experience programming using econometric and machine learning
software (such as R, Stata and SAS), experience with system
management of Linux and Linux programming (including bash, sed, awk
or comparative programming), extensive experience in other
programming packages (sparkR, sparklyr, or pyspark) in addition to
familiarity with other languages (such as Scala, C/C , Fortran,
Julia, and python).
Applicants must be able to provide work authorization to prove
their eligibility to work in the United States.
An applicant for employment also must be a U.S. Citizen, U.S.
National, or hold a permanent resident/green card with intent to
become a U.S. Citizen.

Launched in 2017, the Consumer Finance Institute builds on decades
of research experience at the Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank.
The mission of this Bank-wide initiative is to produce leading-edge
research on how credit markets and payment systems affect the
economy. The CFI creates opportunities for scholars, the financial
industry, and the public sector to collaborate and share insights
on fostering healthy household finances, a stable financial system,
and a resilient economy.
The core staff of the CFI consists of 14 individuals, including six
Research Fellows. This group produces applied research on consumer
finance topics, topical workshops led by regulators, academics, or
industry experts, and larger conferences addressing particular
questions or developments in the markets for consumer credit and
payments. The staff also supports collaboration among researchers
and analysts across the Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank.
